How do you take your Miniature Pinscher out when there’s snow or
ice outside?
If you’re a cold climate dweller,
this is for you… My Miniature Pinscher enjoys
playing in the snow when it’s not that cold outside. The problem is snow and ice would
get stuck in between the pads on his paws. This and the sting of the salt
sprayed all over the sidewalks, mixed with the gritty sand, made it very
uncomfortable for him. Even over a short period of time, the exposure could be
damaging to his paws. On the one hand he had to take
care of business, on the other his paws would get so cold he could barely stand
up… He’d pull and shake one or two paws away from the frozen surface to try to
stop the pain. When we saw him hopping on one foot then another, then another,
we knew there had to be a better way. That’s when we looked into dog
boots. When we purchased our first set
of dog boots, we had to go back to the store to exchange them for the next size
down because we bought them without having our dog with us to try them on.
Eventually I returned the boots because they were doing more harm than
good—even with some training, the poorly designed booties made it uncomfortable
for our dog to walk. Next my wife decided to try
balloons. …It was a friend’s suggestion. She cut the necks off a few small
black balloons, and voila’, four paw covers. Now, I don’t recommend you try
this. We tried it so you don’t have to… Getting the balloons over each of
our dog’s paws was no fun. And because the process of putting them on usually
got air in the balloons, our dog sounded like he was walking around wearing
soggy fins. This could also be dangerous
if your dog tries to chew the balloons off and accidentally swallows one. Not recommended. We knew there had to be a better
way… Then one day we walked past a
store that specialized in pet accessories that had a pair of booties on
display. These boots seemed better designed than the first pair we purchased,
so we gave them a try. Our newest booties were part
nylon, part supple leather and had a rubber cushioned sole (avoid cheap thin
vinyl or plastic soles). But you had to pull the straps tight or else they
would fall off. Result? Our dog would try to shake them off, or chew at the
straps and zipper in the hopes of tearing them off. “Oh no, don’t chew up your
$40 booties!”
Finally, we found a pair of boots
we liked… made by Neo-Paws. Now he can be comfortable, warm and safe in the
snow. Dog boots are not about making a
fashion statement. If you live in an area of frequent snowfall and
below-freezing temperatures, booties are a necessity for your Miniature
Pinscher. By the way, dog boots are also a
good way to protect your Min Pin’s paws from scorching hot pavements.
Min Pins are short haired. Whether your do
or don’t get booties for your dog, don’t subject her to going outside in
below-zero weather without a warm sweater.
