Your Miniature Pinscher Dog and Your Allergies

It seems more people have pet allergies today than they used to when I was a kid. A lot of people would like to get a dog and want to know what breed is non-allergenic (also referred to as hypo-allergenic).

The truth is there is no such thing as a perfectly non-allergenic dog.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not hair shedding that makes you feel miserable. In reality, it’s the dog’s dander that gets to you. Dogs have skin scales and dander like humans. This can never be totally eliminated.

That being said, there are breeds of dogs that are better for people with allergies. These dogs are less allergenic because they don’t shed as much.

Light shedders include breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers, Bichon Friese, Schnauzers, Poodles and Greyhounds.

If you’re planning to get a new puppy for a child who has severe asthma and allergies, ask her pediatrician and allergist before deciding if you should get one as well as what breed would be best.

Miniature Pinschers are short-haired, and do shed. Their shedding isn’t enough to consider it a problem, but they still shed.

The most you’ll notice their shedding is when your dog sleeps on your comforter, or nests in the clean clothes you’ve just put in the laundry basket.

If you find your Miniature Pinscher itching more than usual, and in turn triggering you to sneeze more, nothing beats a bath. Ask your vet for a gentle shampoo. Just don’t wash your dog too often because it will dry her skin.
